Komagane is situated in the southern part of Nagano prefecture where you can see the grand Alps – Central Alps in the west and Southern Alps in the east. The population is 32,000. Many sightseers travel to Senjojiki Kar (cirque), which is at an altitude of 2,600 m, in the Central Alps by ropeway in summer and fall. Specialty sousukatsudon (rice bowl with sauced pork cutlet on top) is popular and many visitors come all the way from afar to enjoy it.

Kozenji temple, famous for shining moths and the legend of the ghost dog Hayataro, has many weeping cherry trees. About 70 weeping cherry trees are planted from Niomon gate to around Daikodo Hall. They are illuminated at night when in full blossom.
Kar is a German word meaning a cirque, or bowl-like geographical feature created about 20,000 years ago by being ground off by ice during the glacial age. Senjojiki Kar spreads immediately below the rocks of an alpine zone exceeding 2,500 m in altitude. When you get off the ropeway, you can see the Senjoujiki Kar right in front of you. The beautiful scenery dynamically changes from one season to another and gives you impression you can never experience below.
Almost all ingredients, from pork to sauce, are produced in Nagano Prefecture for local production and local consumption. On top of the rice covered with a plenty of sliced cabbage is freshly fried pork cutlet sliced into bite-sized pieces. Spread plenty of sauce over the cutlet and have at it. It’s a taste of Komagane you will never forget.
When you have come all the way to Komagane, you should try soba, though sauce katsudon is really good. Zaru soba is thinly sliced and accompanied by wasabi and grated daikon radish. Wasabi cultivated in Nagano Prefecture is used. A connoisseur put wasabi on soba instead of dissolving it in the dipping sauce. Soba, which was boiled and put in cold water before served, is thin, white, chewy, and goes down well. Boiled konnyaku dengaku is also recommended as side dish.

Komagane plateau overlooks beautiful scenery surrounded with mountains with the Central Alps in the west and Southern Alps in the east. There is also Hayataro hot spring village, also known as the “hot spring for beautiful skin.”
What’s Komadora? Sesame is a special product of Komagane City. Komadora is Dorayaki cake with plenty of sesame seeds and sold at Onkashidokoro Fukuzawa, a shop 60 years old. Each one of Komadora is carefully hand-made and gentle taste of beans paste of black sesame flavor covered by soft cake.
Komagane is promoting a sesame project in coordination with Tohatsu Marine, and agricultural and commerce sectors, and administration because sesame is a special product of the city. Sesame produced at the foot of Mt. Komagayama is mainly black sesame, which is a very different kind as its rich flavor is not lost even when it is used for cooking or sweets. You really should taste the sesame when you visit Komagane.
